Mental Health Courts

In 2000, Congress passed America's Law Enforcement and Mental Health Project to begin helping state's and communities create mental health court diversion projects for non-violent mentally ill offenders. Mental Health Courts are similar to drug courts and allow mentally ill offenders to opt into a highly supervised treatment program as an alternative to incarceration. Currently, there are two Mental Health Courts operating in Washington State - both serving misdemeanants in King County.
