Attorney - Legal Aid Justice Center (VA)

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: JUVENILE JUSTICE REFORM IN VIRGINIA

The JustChildren Program of the Legal Aid Justice Center is seeking an experienced and dedicated attorney to help lead our ongoing juvenile justice reform work in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The position's primary focus will be working with local, state, and national advocates to reduce the numbers of children in Virginia who are tried, convicted, and incarcerated as adults. In the course of this initiative it may also be important to address conditions of confinement for those youth who have been or are facing transfer. These tasks will likely require multiple strategies and approaches: direct representation, legislative and policy advocacy, impact litigation, and working with families negatively impacted by the Commonwealth's practices regarding transfer and confinement. The person staffing this position will have the opportunity to work with, and be supported by, national experts and advocates in other states embarking on similar initiatives.

JustChildren is a program of the Legal Aid Justice Center, a non-federally funded legal services program, and has offices in Charlottesville, Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia. We have both attorneys and organizers on our staff, and supervise a legal clinic at the University of Virginia School of Law. Since our founding in 1998 we have worked at various levels across the state to improve Virginia's public education and juvenile justice systems.

Please visit www.justice4all.org to read more about our work.

We have a strong preference for candidates who have experience working in the juvenile and/or criminal justice systems, and a demonstrated ability to approach problems from a variety of perspectives. A license to practice law in Virginia is also strongly preferred though not required. We also expect that the attorney filling this position will supervise a small group of law students from our clinic and incorporate these students into the work of this project.

Salary is dependent on experience. Excellent benefits. The Legal Aid Justice Center is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply for this position.

Position open until filled. Interested applicants are encouraged to send cover letter, resume, and writing sample to:
