Agency Profile:

Society of Counsel Representing Accused Persons (SCRAP) is a private, not-for-profit, Public Defender Law Firm contracting with King County Office of Public Defense.  Society of Counsel represents assigned clients who are indigent and / or unable to afford an attorney and are facing felony, misdemeanor, juvenile offender, truancy, contempt of court, dependency or sexually violent predator proceedings in both Seattle and Kent, WA.

Reports To:                     Practice Area Managing Attorney

FLSA Classification:         Non-Exempt

Payroll Classification:      Full  -Time, Regular

Salary scale: $19.61 – $20.78 / hr or $40,783 – $43,225 annualized plus generous medical, dental and paid leave benefits.

Minimum Requirements:

King County Paralegal Certification plus two years of related legal experience in the criminal justice system preferred; or equivalent combination of other paralegal certification and legal experience; case management and technology proficiency. 

In addition to the above requirements the paralegal must demonstrate accuracy, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently initiative, effective written and verbal communication skills, and cultural sensitivity. 

Must competently and professionally interact with diverse, sometimes agitated and/or mentally ill clientele.

Regularly travel between office and local judicial facilities either by bus, on foot or by automobile.

Candidates must be no less than 21 years of age in order to clear a criminal background check for access to King County Detention facilities.

General Position Summary:

Provides support to criminal defense attorneys at Society of Counsel.  Under the direction of the Unit Manager and attorneys, paralegals conduct research; coordinate and maintain attorneys’ electronic court calendars; prepare and review information pertaining to court cases and legal issues; review discovery and court-related documents; write motions and pleadings; assist with SRA calendar; assist attorneys with discovery and trial preparation;  research and analyze law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, and constitutions to prepare legal documents, such as jury instructions, motions,  briefs, pleadings, appeals, etc.  Must be knowledgeable about commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the criminal justice field and rely upon instructions and established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
