Chapter Three: Sentencing Strategies

A noncitizen defendant’s sentence can often be the most critical aspect in determining
the immigration consequences may result from a conviction. How a defender crafts or
negotiates a sentence can make the difference between whether a conviction will trigger
deportation or not. Thus, understanding the parameters of how Washington State
sentences will be treated under the immigration laws is imperative.
