It is meant as a starting point for defenders to understand the hidden penalties clients may face after conviction. Defendants should understand potential civil and other consequences of a criminal conviction before they plead guilty.

This booklet also is for other criminal justice professionals, social service providers, community members or anyone who is concerned about the vast array of nonconfinement penalties which follow persons with criminal convictions.
